DevKit Licensing
Overview
Game Closure offers two licensing options which are designed to be complementary, the GPLv3 and the Game Closure Free License (GCFL). These licenses allow you to have source code access to the DevKit, but still release proprietary games. You’ll never have to pay us any money to use the DevKit under either of these options.
With the GPLv3, you can collaborate with our Open Source community to learn how to use the DevKit, improve documentation, contribute and receive bug fixes & features, and generally stay up to date with the product. You can distribute and sell the games you build under the GPL, but be sure to comply with any restrictions of the license or platforms you use (make sure to read about the App Store and the GPL here).
The Game Closure Free License (GCFL) allows you to actually sell and distribute proprietary game on mobile devices through Google Play and the Apple App Store. This license makes it free for you to develop and release games; you’ll just need to contribute back any modifications to the SDK that you made, and show our logo when your game starts up.
The GCFL is designed and written to be very straightforward and easy to read, in fact the core of the agreement fits on a [single page]! Just make sure that you are in compliance with a few key items:
- Email a signed copy of the contract for each game that your company makes. The contract is only valid for a particular studio / game combination, so each new game requires a new contract.
- If you make any changes to the engine, be sure to contribute them back under our CLA. If you ship a game without doing this, you will be violating your license.
- Don’t forget to include our splash screen when your game starts up.
Now go forth and create a #1 worldwide hit game!
